Arthur Conan Doyle,\u00a0<\/em>the author of\u00a0<\/em>#Sherlock<\/a>\u00a0Holmes,\u00a0<\/em>was born in Edinburgh on 22 May\u00a0\u00a01859. \u00a0He died of a heart attack on 7 July 1930.<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Trained as a doctor at Edinburgh University in 1881, Arthur Conan Doyle divided his time between medicine and writing.\u00a0His career included being a\u00a0writer and a journalist,\u00a0as well as being a surgeon on a whaling boat and a medical officer on a steamer. He\u00a0twice ran unsuccessfully for parliament. He \u00a0was knighted for producing a pamphlet\u00a0justifying Britain\u2019s involvement in the Boer War and wrote histories of the Boer War and World War One, in which his son, brother and two of his nephews were killed.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Sherlock Holmes<\/em><\/h2>\nSherlock made his first appearance in 1887 in \u2018A Study of Scarlet\u2019, which was published in \u2018Beeton\u2019s Christmas Annual\u2019. the character proved so successful that Conan Doyle wrote more stories involving Holmes. \u00a0Hoping to concentrate on more serious writing, Conan Doyle killed off\u00a0Holmes in 1893, but the public outcry made him resurrect\u00a0the character.<\/em>\n
