Having highlighted the film “The Happytime Murders”\u00a0<\/strong>in my other blog a number of times, I was a little shocked at its content when the trailer was released. I expected something along the lines of “Who framed Roger Rabbit?”<\/p>\n

Sadly this new film is definitely NOT family friendly.<\/p>\n

The Plot<\/h2>\n

The movie is set in a\u00a0world where humans and puppets coexist, although the puppets are treated as second-class citizens. When the former stars of\u00a0the kids\u2019 show\u00a0The Happytime Gang start being bumped off, it takes a washed-up private eye puppet, and his former human partner at the LAPD, to solve the case.<\/p>\n

Background to the film’s problems<\/h2>\n

Devised by Brian Henson, the original 2012 script\u00a0came\u00a0from\u00a0 Todd Berger. This was replaced in 2015 with a script by\u00a0Erich Hoeber\u00a0and Jon Hoeber.<\/p>\n

In 2016<\/a>,\u00a0Jamie Foxx\u00a0was rumoured to be involved in the puppet murders, playing the\u00a0human half of the detective duo.\u00a0 But fast forward to 2017 and Jamie Foxx had been replaced by\u00a0<\/strong>Melissa McCarthy.\u00a0Joel McHale joined the cast in 2017\u00a0<\/a>with The Happytime Murders due for release in August\u00a0 2018.<\/p>\n

Not Family Friendly<\/h2>\n

Brian Henson, son of the iconic Sesame Street puppets creator and chairman of The Jim Henson Company, came up with this\u00a0R-rated puppet project\u00a0<\/a>back in 2008. And it lives up to its intended rating.\u00a0Described as “a filthy comedy set in the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles”, the movie is definitely not for kids. The puppet\u00a0characters,\u00a0 and the situations they find themselves in, are not a bit like the family friendly characters we all remember from childhood.<\/p>\n

In fact, this production is so far removed from those loveable characters that\u00a0Sesame Workshop<\/a>, producers of\u00a0Sesame Street<\/a><\/i>, have filed a lawsuit against STX Productions. They want to stop being associated with\u00a0 the\u00a0\u201cexplicit, profane, drug-using, misogynistic, violent\u201d film. They claim the film’s marketing, which uses the tagline “No Sesame. All Street””, seeks to capitalize on the reputation and goodwill of \u2018Sesame Street\u2019.”<\/p>\n

Sesame Workshop says that although the trailer for the movie is “indescribably crude”, it is not seeking to block the film’s promotion. [The\u00a0Official Age Restricted Video Trailer<\/a>\u00a0is available on YouTube]<\/p>\n

The STX\u2019s response? \u201cFred, Esq.\u201d is quoted as saying \u201cSTX loved the idea of working closely with Brian Henson and the Jim Henson Company to tell the untold story of the active lives of Henson puppets when they\u2019re not performing in front of children.\u00a0Happytime Murders<\/em>\u00a0is the happy result of that collaboration and we\u2019re incredibly pleased with the early reaction to the film and how well the trailer has been received by its intended audience.\u00a0 While we\u2019re disappointed that\u00a0Sesame Street<\/em>\u00a0does not share in the fun, we are confident in our legal position.\u00a0 We look forward to introducing adult moviegoers to our adorably unapologetic characters this summer.\u201d<\/p>\n

As\u00a0Deadline Hollywood<\/a>\u00a0suggests, this is shaping up to be a kind of Sesame Street civil war.\u00a0The story of producing this movie looks set to run for some time yet…..<\/strong><\/p>\n
