A Riddle Of A Murder

A Riddle Of A Murder by Amelia Morgan is the 4th book in the Enchanted Bay Witch Cozy Mystery series.

Plot

Just as donut shop manager and secret witch Meg Walton thinks her sleuthing days are finally behind her, another murder rocks her coastal, Northern California hometown of Enchanted Bay.
The case strikes especially close to home when Meg finds out the victim is one of her mother’s close friends, Hope Riddle. When the local police rule that Hope’s death is a burglary gone bad, Meg sets out to prove them wrong and bring Hope’s real killer to justice–with the help of a few good spells.

Review

I had not read the previous books in the series but I got the impression that Meg and her mum, Beth, were witches. Meg’s mum wanted her to keep this a secret and meg was trying to hide the fact from her police officer boyfriend.

In this story, Beth, had met a new friend called Hope Riddle. The three ladies had decided to spend the day wine tasting but when Meg and Beth turn up at Hope’s house she doesn’t answer the door….they soon discover Hope has been killed!

It looks at first like a burglary gone wrong….but neither Beth nor Meg agree with this idea. Beth asks Meg to use her powers to investigate the case and find out the truth about her friend. While Meg’s detective boyfriend doesn’t want her involved, he quickly realises she will be investigating with or without him.

This book was a quick read. It had a better plot than a lot of cosy mystery books I’ve read recently. There seems to be a theme of police boyfriends letting the heroine take over questioning suspects in a lot of books recently. I’m not a fan of this. However, this book seems to handle it more plausibly than most.

An OK book to take on holiday but nothing to make you think about too much.
