Arthur Conan Doyle

Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of #Sherlock Holmes, was born in Edinburgh on 22 May  1859.  He died of a heart attack on 7 July 1930.

Trained as a doctor at Edinburgh University in 1881, Arthur Conan Doyle divided his time between medicine and writing. His career included being a writer and a journalist, as well as being a surgeon on a whaling boat and a medical officer on a steamer. He twice ran unsuccessfully for parliament. He  was knighted for producing a pamphlet justifying Britain’s involvement in the Boer War and wrote histories of the Boer War and World War One, in which his son, brother and two of his nephews were killed. 

Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock made his first appearance in 1887 in ‘A Study of Scarlet’, which was published in ‘Beeton’s Christmas Annual’. the character proved so successful that Conan Doyle wrote more stories involving Holmes.  Hoping to concentrate on more serious writing, Conan Doyle killed off Holmes in 1893, but the public outcry made him resurrect the character.

Benedict Cumberbatch plays the famous sleuth Sherlock Holmes in the latest BBC series. A holiday special of the modernised crime drama took Sherlock back to Victorian London. Joined by his faithful friend John Watson, played by Martin Freeman, they examined the mysterious case of a crazed bride who fired shots into the street before shooting herself. Was this a vengeful bride from beyond the grave intent on murdering her husband? Will Sherlock be able to solve the case of the abominable bride?
