A Line to Kill

Plot

Private Investigator Daniel Hawthorne and the writer Anthony Horowitz have been invited to a literary festival on the island of Alderney to talk about their new book . . .

Very soon they discover that dark forces are at work. Alderney is in turmoil over a planned power line that will cut through it, desecrating a war cemetery and turning neighbour against neighbour. When the festival’s wealthy sponsor is found brutally murdered, Alderney goes into lockdown and Hawthorne knows he doesn’t have to look too far for suspects. There’s no escape. The killer is still on the island. And there’s about to be a second death . . .

Review

A Line to Kill is the third book in the Hawthorne series. I must admit I thought there were only going to be three books in the series, but there is a fourth (The Twist of a Knife) in the pipeline. Not that I’m complaining. I love the Hawthorne series.

Invited to a literary festival on Alderney to talk about their new book, A Line to Kill sees Private Investigator Daniel Hawthorne and writer Anthony Horowitz stuck in a small hotel with a bunch of writers. An eclectic band, the visiting authors included a blind medium, a French performance poet and a celebrity chef. All of them seemed to be hiding a number of unpleasant secrets and, as Horowitz discovers, Hawthorne is hiding a number of secrets of his own.

The book started by saying there had never been a murder on Alderney. So it was obvious that that was about to change. As the festival sponsor is killed, everyone is trapped with the killer….and the body count just kept increasing!

Could the Hawthorne and Horowitz solve the case?

In the tradition of murder mystery novels, Hawthorne is there to give a full explanation of the crime. As usual I had missed many of the clues along the way, just like the fictional Horowitz had.

A great read. Recommended.
