The Mousetrap is the world’s longest-running play of all time. But just ‘whodunnit’ ? The City Adventurers needed to know…..
What happens in The Mousetrap?
Five guests arrive at a remote Monkswell Manor during a blizzard and worse is to come. Detective Sergeant Trotter arrives on the hotel doorstep and informs the hotel guests of a nearby murder……and that they’re all suspects!
Everyone is questioned and seems to fit the murderer’s descriptions. As the evening draws on, there is another murder, this time in the hotel itself! We learn the guests and hotel owners shady pasts one by one until the murderer is revealed……..and are then sworn to secrecy. So although we now know ‘whodunnit’ we are not at liberty to tell.
History
The Mousetrap, a quintessentially British ‘whodunnit’ written by Agatha Christie, has become a British institution. It premiered at Nottingham’s Theatre Royal on 6 October 1952 before playing to regional audiences. Opening in London at the Ambassadors Theatre on 25 November 1952, it played there until transferring to St. Martin’s Theatre in 1974.
There’s still an original cast member and one surviving prop from 1952 in The Mousetrap. Deryck Guyler voices the news broadcast heard on the radio during the play and the clock that sits on the fireplace is from the original set.
